Once you have had your fill of the city’s most sought-after sights, you should indulge in outdoor activities. Possibly the most fun activity is learning archery, the national sport of Bhutan. Spend a few hours learning archery at the Changlimithang Archery Ground and while you may not become an Olympic-level archer by the end of day , you are guaranteed to have an enjoyable time. Other outdoorsy activities include trekking in the Jomolhari mountain or taking a hike to the Tango Buddhist Institute.

You can also take a day trip to the Motithang Takin Preserve to see takins which are the national animal of Bhutan. The takins are revered animals and a legendary folktale passed down over the centuries adds to their mystique. Of all the Bhutanese arts and crafts, the textiles handwoven in Bhutan are perhaps the most famous. Visit the Royal Textile Academy to watch the weavers in action as they weave beautiful fabrics with their hands. There is also a shop at the museum from where you can buy handmade textiles to carry back home.

Nearing the end of your trip, you would want to buy memorabilia that would forever remind you of the time spent in Thimphu. Head to the city’s weekend market and National Handicrafts Emporium. Here, you can buy Bhutanese handicrafts, Cane and Bamboo products, jewellery, Dzi beads, Dappa, masks and Buddhist paintings.

Finally, no trip to Thimphu is complete without sampling some delectable Bhutanese fare. When in the city, be sure to try these famous dishes - Shakam ema datshi, Shakam paa, Sikam Paa, Gope, Gondo Datshi, Hoentay, Khatem, Jaju, Khur-le, and Tshampa.
