Bukhara tourism has seen an upsurge over the years helped by the listing of its historical center on UNESCO’s World Heritage list. Most tourists seek Bukhara tour packages that take them to the old part of the city. When tourists travel to Bukhara, they start their tour with the Ark of Bukhara. It is a grand fortress that was built many centuries back around the 5th Century AD. It is a large earthen fortification and resembles a rectangle. It also houses museums that tell the story of the city. The next stop on the tour is the Po-i-Kalan which is a religious complex located around the Kalan Minaret. The most distinctive buildings of this complex are the Kalan Minaret, Kalan Mosque, and the Mir-i Arab Madrassah. The ensemble is also a great place to watch the sunset.


Then comes the striking Lyab-i-Hauz which is an ensemble surrounding the pond on three sides with Kukeldash Madrasah, The Khanaka of Nadir Divan-begi, and The Madrasah of Nadir Divan-begi. The area around the pond is marked with cafes, restaurants, and little shops. The Samanid Mausoleum is also worth a visit as it was built as the final resting place of the Islamic Samanid dynasty. The architecture of the building is very striking with baked bricks, motifs, and arches. The Chor Minor is another beautiful building built-in 1807. The Ulugbek Madrassah and Abdulaziz Khan Madrassah are also well-known for their design. The latter is a great place to go souvenir shopping. Another popular place of worship is the Bolo Haouz Mosque was built in 1712 and lies on the opposite side of the Citadel of Ark.


There are plenty of places in Bukhara where you could shop for souvenirs, local craft, and spices. Many of these bazaars are covered to protect you from the sun and heart. Most tourists head to Taqi-Sarrafon Market and Toqi Telpak Furushon to do their trip shopping. If you want to see locals shopping then visit Defucon Bazaar which is a farmer’s market. While in Bukhara, you should buy rugs, embroidered jackets, Fur hats and jackets and embroidered blankets. After a long day of sightseeing and shopping, be sure to head to a local Hammam to enjoy the steam room and the scrubs.
