Pamir Highway - An Epic Adventure
Pamir Highway is one of the most dangerous and adventurous route in the world. Travelling on the second highest highway in the world can be the trip of the lifetime. This highway is paved and unpaved both. Unpaved parts make it more dangerous. But this highway has been historically used as one of the old silk routes for trades. Pamir highway runs from Khorog in Tajikistan to Osh in Kyrgyzstan. One cannot be just excited to travel on this route, chills and thrills comes automatically while one travels on this highway. Landslides and rock fall is quite a regular phenomena here. And like all high altitude mountain routes in the world here also, weather is quite unpredictable on top.
Historically called Pamir Highway is now officially called M41. Most of the Pamir Highway is located in Tajikistan, situated in the middle of Central Asia with India to the south and China to the east, but the highway also goes through Afghanistan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan in Central Asia. It is the only continuous route through the difficult terrain of the mountains and serves as the main supply route to Tajikistan's Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region. Pamir highway was partly made in 19th century and partly in 20th century during 1930s. Most part of the highway is unpaved and the road is heavily damaged in many places by erosion, earthquakes, landslides and avalanches. The Pamir highway leads from the city of Osh, Kyrgyzstan, through Tajikistan (Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Province, Khorug, Dushanbe), via the eastern part of Uzbekistan, to Mazar-e Sharif in northern Afghanistan. Pamir highway is one of the world’s most famous routes for the adventurous travellers and lies mostly in Tajikistan, the highland country of Central Asia. The second highest altitude highway in the world sits 4655 m above the sea level. The section between Dushanbe and Murghab has the European route number E 008.
You can take a flight or hire a Jeep from Dushanbe to Khorog. But weather condition should be good for flight to take off. From Khorog you can hire your vehicle. Travellers should be experienced with such terrains to travel on such dangerous road. Weather plays a challenge so does the bad condition of the road for drivers. Any driving mistake can cause serious consequences. Road is small and goes through deep valleys. Road is open throughout the year but it can be closed any time when there is no access because of snow. Decay of the road makes it even more difficult and high winds can spoil your travel, so do check weather conditions before starting your journey on Pamir Highway.
