The Dordoy Bazaar near Bishkek happens to be the largest public market place and shopping centre in Central Asia. Dordoy Bazaar opened up in 1992 as wholesale market across the country and since then the bazaar’s popularity kept rising transforming it in the monument of raw commerce today. It stretches for more than a kilometre on the north-eastern outskirts of the Kyrgyz capital. It is one of the main entrepots for reaching Chinese consumers goods to retailers in Kyrgzystan, Russia, and Uzbekistan. Dordoy Bazaar is big employer. Around 20,000 people make their living at the market. Many of them use shipping containers as outlets for storing and selling their wares. The Bazaar hoseses all kinds of goods, from Chinese and Turkish knock-offs to Russian music CDs, all of them stocked in the thousands of stacked shipping containers that serve as shops and storage space. Practically, the entire bazaar is built out of shipping containers organized in rows to form streets and plazas of sort.
Different parts of Dordoy is specialised in various types of consumer products. One can get clothes, shoes, electronic items, toys, furniture, toys and other stuffs here. One can get some kind of groceries here too but in very limited way as Dordoy is not mainly a produce market but occasional produce vendors are present here. Most of the item that you see being sold here comes from China and then Turkey. Clothing from Thailand and Europe, Music CDs from Russia, and goods from different parts of Eurasia arrive here. For the convenience of the traders, charter buses run from Dordoy to several major cities in Kyrgyzstan. While Kyrgyzstan boasts of fine handicrafts, Jewellery and leather products, Dordoy Bazaar in Bishkek gives you lot of imported items from China and Europe that makes it a great place for traders and travellers both.
